Our teachers are graduates and students of the Bay Area Center for Waldorf Teacher Training, with experience in Waldorf Early Childhood Education as well as Forest School Education. We follow Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy of the three-fold human being, head, heart and hands, and work with a loving interest in and acceptance of each child.
Young children learn through imitation, through the experience of diverse sensory impressions, and through movement. We focus on real rather than virtual experiences to support the child in forming a healthy relationship to the world. Play makes it possible for young children to digest and understand their experiences.
At the heart of Waldorf Education, is the sense of rhythm. With a rhythmic structure to the days, weeks, and years, children are able to truly thrive. In our Waldorf Forest School, we follow a strong rhythm that holds the children and allows for them to develop a sense of trust and security in the world around them. As the months go by, nature brings new wonders to behold in the world around us, connecting us to the cycles of the earth in which we live. We strive to cultivate a sense of reverence for mother nature and the food and nourishment she provides.

Most forest schools will change their location from day to day or week to week. The basis of the Waldorf EC program is the 3 R’s, Rhythm, Routine, and Reverence. East Bay Forest School keeps consistency by returning to the same location each day and each week. Within our forest home, the children are able to develop a sense of trust, comfort, confidence, and feel safe, as they get to know this particular setting very well. Together, with the children, we have created and continue to create special spaces within the forest, using the resources found within the forest. We have a “dining nest”, a crafting and shelter teepee, a redwood circle room, and a special gnome house we go to visit from time to time. With all of these special spaces we have created, we are able to move between them throughout the day for each portion of our school rhythm. These spaces give some form to the structure of the day and are spaces in which the child may feel held.
We also uphold a rhythmical structure to our days, weeks, and months. Our daily rhythm remains consistent with a little flexibility and wiggle room for honoring what is needed in each particular moment. Each day of the week has its defining elements, such as the food we eat, the children who attend that day, as well as the way in which the story is told that day. The months are distinguished by seasonal songs, verses, stories, and festivals that we honor. We strive to steep the senses within the changing world around us as we pass through the cyclical rhythms of nature itself.
We go to school in the rain!!! Prepare to gear your children up in rain suits and rain boots with warm layers underneath and pack a change of clothes and socks! The children love to get muddy and splash in puddles. We also have a dry space to take shelter, by tarping our teepee both above it and below it.
We do! We have hot bone broth and vegetable soup on Monday, healthy baked items and seasonal fruit on Tuesday, and steamed rice with sweet potatoes, braggs aminos, nutritional yeast, and seaweed on Wednesdays. We bring the hot items in a thermos and we serve it at 10AM, just an hour after we begin our day in the forest. We wash up, say a blessing to mother earth, and share a hot meal. All of our food items are sourced optimally and organically.
Please contact us for tuition details. We are accepting new students ages 2-6 years old. We will get back to you as soon as possible.
